Leak-check calculator

Enter the refrigerant and charge of a unit to see its CO₂ equivalent, the leak-check interval under the EU F-Gas Regulation and whether it falls under the US EPA leak-repair rules (40 CFR Part 84). No sign-up needed.

Simplified aid based on Regulation (EU) 2024/573 (Art. 5) and 40 CFR Parts 82 and 84. It does not cover national rules, every exemption or blends not listed. Always check the current regulations; the equipment operator remains responsible for compliance.

How the EU leak-check interval works

Under Article 5 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573, equipment containing HFCs needs periodic leak checks by certified personnel once the charge reaches 5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (charge in kg × GWP ÷ 1,000). For HFOs listed in Annex II, the threshold is a charge in kilograms. A working leak detection system doubles the interval.

50 to < 500 t CO₂e (HFC) · 10 to < 100 kg (HFO)6 months12 months

How the US Part 84 leak-repair rule works

Since January 1, 2026, appliances with a full charge of 15 lb or more of an HFC refrigerant (or a substitute with a GWP above 53) are covered by 40 CFR Part 84, Subpart C — except residential and light-commercial air conditioning. Each time refrigerant is added, the leak rate is calculated: (lb added ÷ full charge) × (365 ÷ days since the last addition) × 100. If it exceeds the threshold — 10% for comfort cooling, 20% for commercial refrigeration, 30% for industrial process refrigeration — the leaks must be repaired within 30 days and verified.

Track every unit automatically

Airmaintix keeps a refrigerant log per unit, calculates intervals and leak rates on every service and reminds you before a leak check is due.
